Joel is the co-founder of ACORN OakNorth, a fintech firm focused on unlocking the potential in bespoke SME lending globally using its data and technology platform, ACORN machine. In the UK, the firm operates as OakNorth – an award-winning bank that Joel and his business partner, Rishi Khsola, founded in 2015 to address the mid-market funding gap in the UK. The bank offers loans of £0.5m-£30m to SMEs and has to date, lent over £1.7bn without a single default.
Outside of the UK, the business operates as ACORN machine, a data and technology platform being licensed to other banks and lenders, enabling them to replicate OakNorth’s success with SME lending in the UK, in their own market/s. In total, the business has raised over £364m, achieving a valuation of $1.4bn in under three years.
Prior to this, Joel co-founded Copal Amba – a financial research outsourcing business which was acquired by Moody’s Corporation (NYSE: MCO) in 2014 after it had scaled to c.3,000 employees across 11 markets. Joel has a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and a Masters in Accounting & Finance from the London School of Economics.
